A Short Guide

How to recognise real leather.

Four quick checks you can do in any shop, from a family that has worked with leather in Alanya since 1996.

Check 1 of 4

Look at the grain

Real leather is never perfectly even. Small pores, lines and marks are normal. A surface that repeats the same pattern exactly, like a print, is a warning sign.

Check 2 of 4

Touch it

Real leather feels warm and soft. Press it with your thumb and it creases, then slowly recovers.

Check 3 of 4

Check the inside

Look at a cut edge or the back. Real leather shows fibres, not a fabric layer or a smooth plastic core.

Check 4 of 4

Smell it

Real leather has a natural, earthy smell. A strong chemical or plastic smell is a warning.

Looking After It

Simple care for leather and suede.

Keep it dry

If leather gets wet, let it dry slowly at room temperature, away from heaters and direct sun.

Let it breathe

Store bags in a cotton dust bag, not in plastic, and fill them lightly with paper so they keep their shape.

Brush suede

Use a soft suede brush in one direction to lift the nap and remove dust.

Feed smooth leather

Once or twice a year, a little leather conditioner keeps smooth leather supple. Test it on a hidden spot first.
